What’s that font?
The Thank You for Shopping With Us! type treatment is derived from Bookman, a typeface whose origins go back to 1858, with the design of Antique Oldstyle No. 7 by A. G. Phemister. It was later copied and adapted by numerous foundries and designers, among them Wadsworth A. Parker, who dubbed it Bookman, and gave it its first few swash characters.
There are have been numerous and notable versions of Bookman created since, including ITC Bookman in 1975, but the origins of the variation employed in Thank You for Shopping With Us! remain unknown. “Sixties Bookman,” as it has been named by type designer Mark Simonson, was a popular typeface during the 60’s and 70’s and was made widely available through type shops, lettering houses and rub-on lettering companies. Simonson surmises that Thank You for Shopping With Us! was custom drawn as part of an ad campaign in the late 60’s, and was bootlegged continuously after that.
Simonson has created his own hybrid of early and Sixties Bookman called Bookmania. Other digital versions of Bookman abound on the internet.
